Summer Forum 2022
Ableism: What It Is & Why It Matters. With Guest Speaker, Summer Mingo (she/her) of South Georgia Behavior Associates
Ableism is a form of discrimination and/or prejudice against the disabled. Disability Rights activists have been educating us on ableism since the early 80's and ask us to take into account the varied experiences, needed lifelong supports, strengths, and unique challenges of a disabled life. As Behavior Analysts, this information and education can greatly shape how we plan for values-based outcomes, shape supporting environments, train caregivers and those that support the people we work for, and to co-create plans with those we serve that plan for social validity from day 1. Since the majority of us work in the medical model with the autistic population, it is key to identify our own biases', self-reflect, and identify our own limitations and areas for mentorship/education. This presentation offers an introductory level of disability studies in regard to ableism, how that connects to behavior analysis service delivery today, and discusses actionable behavior analytic strategies you can implement immediately.
